Thrilling end to a 2-game series in New York, the Cardinals hang on to split the series with a 4-2 win over the Mets.  The starting pitchers were in control all the way.  Jerry Koosman gave up 8 singles and walked for, but was able to avoid trouble for the most part.  The Cards loaded the bases in the 1st inning and scored one on a walk, but Koosman was able to get out of further trouble.  

The Mets got that run back when Duffy Dyer opened the 3rd inning with a homer off Rick Wise.  But Wise shut the Mets down from there.  Over the 1st 8 innings, Wise allowed 6 singles and 2 walks, in addition to Dyer's home run.  The Cardinals struck right back in the top of the 4th to take the lead thanks to a walk, passed ball, single and ground out from the lower third of the lineup.

The score stayed at 2-1 until the bottom of the 9th. Wise came out to try to finish it off and was greeted with a Rusty Staub single. John Milner popped up to shortstop and then Jim Fregosi, who's now hitting .429, doubled to right. Slow-footed Staub tried to score and as he beat the throw, Fregosi went to 3rd with the winning run and only one out.  Red Schoendienst decided it was time to go to the bullpen and bring in hard throwing, but wild, Jim Bibby. Bibby made Schoendienst look like a genius when he struck out Dave Schneck and got Dyer to fly out to strand Fregosi at 3rd.

In the 11th, the Cards got to Tug McGraw.  With 1 out, Matty Alou knocked a run scoring double and the Cards picked up an insurance run on a Ted Sizemore single to take a 4-2 lead.  "Shaky" Joe Grzenda worked around a 2-out single to pick up the save.

The Cardinals go home to welcome Montreal for three, while the Mets will face the Pirates in a 3-game series.

Cardinals Trip Mets, 4-2, in Extra Innings St. Louis Cardinals starter Rick Wise pitched his team past the New York Mets, 4-2. The winner was Rich Folkers in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Tug McGraw took the loss. Getting the save was Joe Grzenda, his 1st. St. Louis used a timely hit from Matty Alou to get the win. The first baseman stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the 11th inning to put the Cardinals ahead, 3-2. It was his only hit in 6 at-bats, but it made an impact. "I just tried to attack the bottom of the zone," Wise said. St. Louis goes to 3-2.
