It was a clear day with the wind blowing out to right at Wrigley Field, but the 18216 fans in attendance saw an extremely sloppy game played as the Pirates beat the Cubs 5-2.  Pittsburgh won despite committing 5 errors, 3 by their pitchers.  The Cubs chipped in with 3 errors of their own.  However both teams' pitchers were up to the task as each team stranded 11 runners and only gave up 1 unearned run.

The Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the third on a Billy Williams 2-run homer, following a Richie Hebner error that put Don Kessinger on base.  Not all of the fielding in this game was a disaster, however, as Manny Sanguillen had thrown out Jose Cardenal stealing, or the score would be 3-1.

The score stayed there until the 6th.  One of the unlikeliest Pirates, Gene Alley, put the Pirates on top to stay, 3-2, with a 2-run homer off Cub starter Burt Hooton.  Hooton knuckled under to keep the Pirates off the board through the rest of his 7 innings.  

The Cubs kept threatening.  Bill North reached 2nd on Pirate starter Nellie Briles' 2nd throwing error of the game.  He tried to score on Jose Cardenal's single, but was thrown out by Al Oliver on a close play at the plate.  In the 8th, they loaded the bases with 2-out off Bob Johnson, but Luke Walker came in from the bullpen to get pinch-hitter Carmen Fanzone on a grounder the short. 

While that was going on, the Pirates put up insurance runs in the 8th and 9th to account for the 5-2 win.  Luke Walker finished the game and posted his first save.

Pittsburgh Beats Chicago, 5-2 The Pittsburgh Pirates picked up a win at Wrigley Field 1938-1978, knocking off the Chicago Cubs, 5-2. On the mound for Pittsburgh was right-hander Nelson Briles, who played a pivotal role in the win. The loss makes Chicago 3-3. Pittsburgh used the timely hitting of Gene Alley to capture the win. The shortstop socked a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Pirates ahead, 3-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a big one. "It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Pittsburgh manager Bill Virdon. "It's usually not just one thing."
