The Padres used good pitching and 1 very timely hit to continue their surprising early season success as they beat the Astros 4-2.  The Padres won the last three games of the four game series to have good momentum for the home opener tomorrow against the Braves.

Houston charged out with 2 runs in the bottom of the first with 2 quick runs, but Fred Norman buckled down from there, holding the Astros big lineup to only 2 more singles through the rest of his 7 innings.  Ed Acosta worked around 2 singles and a walk the last 2 innings with 4 strikeouts to get his second save.

San Diego got one of the runs back in the 2nd when Tommy Helms threw away a routine ground ball allowing Nate Colbert to score from 2nd.  Don Wilson was cruising along in solid command of the game. But in the 6th, he walked Colbert again with 2 out to put 2 men on when Steve Whitaker got into a fastball for a 3-run homer, putting San Diego up 4-2.  That was the end of the scoring as the pitchers didn't allow anything else.

Wilson was the tough luck loser, now 1-2 with a 1.99 ERA.  Reliever JR Richard struck out 5 in the last 2 innings, keeping it close fore a rally that didn't materialize.  A quirk in the scheduling has Houston off tomorrow night for the 2nd Friday in a row before San Francisco comes in for 3 in a wraparound series.

Padres Upend Astros, 4-2 San Diego rode a decent outing from starter Fred Norman to victory over the Houston Astros. The final score was 4-2. Ed Acosta earned the save, his 2nd, for the Padres. At 6-2, the Padres have played well so far. San Diego used the timely hitting of Steve Whitaker to capture the win. The right fielder socked a 3-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Padres ahead, 4-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a big one. "I like what I saw today," said San Diego manager Preston Gomez, "and I can't wait to get back out there and do it again."
