April 13, 1972. Kansas City 5, California 2.

Kansas City takes the rubber game of a 3 game series with a 5-2 win over California.  The win keeps KC in first place on the young season.  The Angels' uneven start to the season continues as they fall to 2-3. Curiously, the Angels have not had consecutive wins or losses so far.

After Amos Otis manufactured a run in the first, California came back to tie the game in the 2nd on a sacrifice fly.  Then, in the 3rd, they took a 3-2 lead when pitcher Rudy May homered to right-center field, just short of the fountains.  

Kansas City answered right back in the bottom of the 3rd.  With one out, Otis walked and went to third on Cookie Rojas' single.  Although appearing to teeter, Skipper Del Rice decided to stay with May to face lefty John Mayberry.  Mayberry provided instant feedback on the decision by depositing Rudy May's first pitch on the other side of the wall.  With that 3-run homer, the Royals took a lead they would never relinquish, adding on an insurance run in the 8th on a Carl Taylor solo home run.  

Roger Nelson picked up his first win, going 7 innings.  Ted Abernathy picked up his league leading 3rd save.  In fact, Norm Angelini and Abernathy each had a 1-2-3  inning of relief.  Kansas City stays around to welcome the White Sox into town for 4 games, including a Sunday doubleheader.  California heads back to Orange County to start a 5 game homestand against the Rangers and Twins.

The Kansas City Royals defeated the California Angels, 5-2, in AL action at KC Municipal Stadium 1969-1972. Kansas City pitcher Roger Nelson had a standout performance. Ted Abernathy collected his 3rd save. The loss has the Angels at 2-3.

John Mayberry took Rudy May deep in the bottom of the third. His 3-run home run put the Royals on top, 4-2. In all, Mayberry had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 4.

Mayberry told a Kansas City Star reporter that he was "more than satisfied" with the win.

Boston's hitters looked like they were answering the early call today as they came around and put a whooping on Cleveland, 7-1.  Tommy Harper took Gaylord Perry's 4th pitch over the left field wall to lead off the game with a 1-0 lead and the Red Sox just kept going.  Cleveland got its only run of the game in the bottom of the 3rd on Del Unser's RBI single. But any idea of a shutdown inning went by the boards when Boston put 3 on the board in the top of the 4th off Perry.  Perry, however, dug his own hole that inning with 2 walks to start the inning. Carlton Fisk doubled in one, followed by Ben Oglivie's RBI single and Juan Beniquez' sacrifice fly.  Oglivie had a 2-run single in the 9th to put the game out of reach. Sonny Siebert pitched well, going 7 innings, fanning 5 and only allowing 1 run to even his record at 1-1. Gary Peters cleaned up the last 2 innings. April 13, 1972. Pittsburgh 5, Chicago Cubs 2

It was a clear day with the wind blowing out to right at Wrigley Field, but the 18216 fans in attendance saw an extremely sloppy game played as the Pirates beat the Cubs 5-2.  Pittsburgh won despite committing 5 errors, 3 by their pitchers.  The Cubs chipped in with 3 errors of their own.  However both teams' pitchers were up to the task as each team stranded 11 runners and only gave up 1 unearned run. The Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the third on a Billy Williams 2-run homer, following a Richie Hebner error that put Don Kessinger on base.  Not all of the fielding in this game was a disaster, however, as Manny Sanguillen had thrown out Jose Cardenal stealing, or the score would be 3-1. The score stayed there until the 6th.  One of the unlikeliest Pirates, Gene Alley, put the Pirates on top to stay, 3-2, with a 2-run homer off Cub starter Burt Hooton.  Hooton knuckled under to keep the Pirates off the board through the rest of his 7 innings.   The Cubs ...

 Pittsburgh ran their winning streak to 3 games with a 5-3 win over the Mets.  This was Bob Moose's first start and it was a dandy.  Moose threw a complete game only allowing 5 hits, 2 earned runs, and didn't walk anybody. Pittsburgh got off on the right foot in the top of the 1st when Roberto Clemente followed up a Dave Cash single with a 2-run homer. He later had an RBI triple in the 8th to finish with 3 hits, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.  That RBI triple and Clemente scoring on Al Oliver's single gave the Pirates some breathing room at 5-2.  John Milner hit a leadoff homer in the 9th, but the Mets couldn't threaten any more than that. Those 3 hits by Clemente push his career total to within 106 of the magic 3000 plateau, which seems like an easily attainable goal this year if he stays healthy.
