April 13, 1972. Baltimore 3, Milwaukee 2 (Game 2)

Milwaukee was cruising to a doubleheader sweep in the second game as Skip Lockwood took a 1-hit shutout into the the bottom of the 9th with a 2-0 lead.  George Scott was the big offensive cog for the Brewers.  His 4th inning solo shot was his 2nd homer of the doubleheader.  Then in the 6th, the Brewers loaded the bases on Mike Cuellar with nobody out.  Scott hit another towering fly, but it landed just short of the wall in Don Buford's run good for a sacrifice fly. Cuellar got out of the jam down only 2-0 when he then induced a double play grounder.

Lockwood was masterful and kept the Birds off balance all night.  Going into the 9th, he'd only allowed a 4th inning single to Terry Crowley and a 2nd inning walk to Blair.  He'd retired 19 of the last 20 batters.  But all that changed in the 9th.  Pinch-hitter Don Baylor led off with a single.  He went to 2nd when Lockwood walked Don Buford.  Baylor scored and Buford went to 3rd on Merv Rettenmund's double and there were still no outs. Dave Bristol took Lockwood out, at least 1 batter too late, and went to Archie Reynolds.  Reynolds got the first part of the plan done by striking out Bobby Grich.  The Brewers decided to intentionally walk lefty Terry Crowley to load the bases for Brooks Robinson. 

All Reynolds needed was a grounder to short, but Robinson ripped a single up the middle letting Buford and Rettenmund come flying in with the game winning runs. Eddie Watt pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief for the win, and the Orioles hope this momentum will carry on this weekend when the welcome the Yankees in for 4.

Orioles Score Late, Upend Brewers, 3-2 The Baltimore Orioles had to overcome a fine performance from Milwaukee pitcher Skip Lockwood to grab a 3-2 win at Memorial Stadium 1959-1975. Lockwood allowed 3 runs over 8 innings. Eddie Watt, now 1-0, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2 innings. The win takes Baltimore to 2-5. The game was decided with one out in the bottom of the ninth. With Baltimore trailing 2-1, Brooks Robinson hit a changeup from Archie Reynolds to center for a 2-run single. Just like that, the Orioles had a walk-off win. "We'll relax tonight and enjoy this win," said Robinson.
