The A's continue their slow start to the 1972 season as they fall to the Rangers, 5-3.  Texas played long ball with reigning Cy Young Vida Blue.  Jeff Burroughs hit a solo homer in the 2nd and Rangers' starter Mike Paul hit a surprise 2-run blast in the 3rd to get the Rangers off to a 3-0 lead.

Blue settled in after that, but the A's couldn't muster much against Mike Paul.  Sal Bando doubled and scored on a ground ball in the 4th, but they didn't have anything else going until the 7th.  Paul started to tire and came out after Joe Rudi singled with one out in the 8th.  The A's were able to break through against the Rangers' bullpen. A Bando walk and Mike Epstein single loaded the bases with 2 out. Reliever Frank Bolick walked Dave Duncan to force in a run and make it 5-2. After a wild pitch brought in another run, Jim Shellenback fanned pinch-hitter Bill McNulty to end the rally.  The A's threatened again in the 9th and got runners at 1st & 3rd with 2-out and Reggie Jackson at the plate as the winning run.  Texas brought in lefty Paul Lindblad to face him, even though Reggie homered off him yesterday.  

Today was a new day, however, as Reggie grounded Lindblad's first pitch to second for the final out.  Texas evened their record at 3-3, but Oakland, a pick by most to repeat as AL West champs, falls to 1-4.

Rangers Win at Oakland, 5-3 Oakland Coliseum 1968-1995 was the site of a competitive game between the Oakland Athletics and Texas Rangers. The Texas Rangers picked up a win at Oakland Coliseum 1968-1995, taking down the Oakland Athletics, 5-3. Starting pitcher Mike Paul was a big reason why. Paul Lindblad got credit for the save for Texas. It was his 2nd of the year. With Texas leading 1-0 in the top of the third, Paul hit a fastball from Vida Blue for a 2-run home run. It was his 1st home run of the season and put the Rangers ahead, 3-0. "Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Paul told the Texas Gazette. The loss drops Oakland to 1-4.
