April 12, 1972. San Francisco 3, Cincinnati 2.

If President Nixon were to hear the headlines of tonight's game at Riverfront Stadium he'd be elated, but not because he has a rooting interest between San Francisco and Cincinnati.  The Reds have fallen tonight and are unbeaten no more.  San Francisco uses an improbable 9th inning rally to push by the Reds 3-2, spoiling an outstanding outing by Reds' starter Jack Billingham.

Billingham and Giants' lefty Sam McDowell were locked in a tight battle.  Cincinnati drew first blood in the bottom of the third when Joe Morgan drove in Billingham with an RBI single.  The Giants broke back to tie in the top of the 5th when McDowell drove in Willie Mays with a 2-out single.

McDowell tired after 6, allowing only the 1 run, but having to dance around 7 hits, 3 walks and a hit batter.  With 2nd and 3rd with one out in the 8th, Reds' skipper Sparky Anderson had to make the tough choice to pinch hit for Billingham, even though he was 2/2 with a walk to that point.  Bobby Tolan hit a scoring fly ball that gave Cincinnati the lead, 2-1.

Clay Carroll took the mound for the 9th and things were looking good. After Willie McCovey flied out to start the 9th, Gary Matthews singled. Willie Mays grounded into a fielder's choice at 2nd for the 2nd out.  From there, pinch-hitter Jim Ray Hart worked a walk in a key 9 pitch at bat to move Mays to 2nd. Dave Rader hit a hot ground single to center and Mays just beat Cesar Geronimo's throw to the plate to tie the game.  With runners now at 1st and 2nd with 2-out, Ken Henderson sent up to pinch hit for the pitcher.  Henderson laced a 1-1 fastball to right field and this time it was Hart that beat OF Hal McRae's throw to the plate to put SF in the lead.

Jerry Johnson came out for the 9th. He worked around a 1-out single by Tony Perez to secure the win.  What an exciting game, but the 16,458 that turned out on a brisk April weeknight went home disappointed that the Reds will not go 162-0 this year.

Giants Earn 3-2 Win Versus Reds The Cincinnati Reds got a superb performance from pitcher Jack Billingham. Still, it wasn't enough to beat San Francisco. The Giants won the game, 3-2. Billingham threw 8.0 innings of 6-hit ball. San Francisco reliever Jim Willoughby picked up the win, upping his record to 1-1. Clay Carroll absorbed the loss. The win puts San Francisco at 2-4. San Francisco used the timely hitting of Ken Henderson to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Giants on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer. "Every loss hurts," said Cincinnati manager Mike Mayes. "But this was a tough one."
