Despite the fact that these two teams finished at the bottom of the NL East last year, the Expos and Phillies put on an exciting game for the fans at the Vet with Montreal pulling out a 3-2 win over Steve Carlton and the Phillies.

The anticipated pitching duel between Carlton and Expo ace Bill Stoneman was as advertised.  The Phillies jumped on Stoneman when Deron Johnson led off the home half of the 2nd with a walk, followed by Greg Luzinski triple (in real life, Luzinski hit an amazing 5 triples in 1972). Luzinski came in on a Larry Bowa single that put runners at 1st and 2nd with nobody out and it looking like Stoneman could get blown out here.  Stoneman got Denny Doyle to hit into a double play and Carlton grounded out to halt things there.  

When Stoneman left for a pinch-hitter in the top of the 7th, he'd only allowed  3 more hits and a walk.  In the meantime, the Expos got on the board when John Bateman, who'd reached on an error, scored on a 2-out balk by Carlton. 

After Hal Breeden singled to open the 7th, Gene Mauch had a tough choice. If he bunts Breeden, a slow runner, to 2nd, Stoneman is the next batter. However, if he doesn't bunt him over, they might never get another chance to score off Carlton.  Mauch chose to have Hector Torres bunt Breeden to 2nd and send Bob Bailey out to pinch hit.  Bailey flied out for the 2nd out, but then Larry Lintz walked. Mauch got aggressive here and pinch-ran Mike Jorgensen at 2nd for Breeden and was vindicated for the move when Coco Laboy doubled into the right field corner to score Jorgensen and Lintz for a 3-2 lead.

The Phillies threatened in the 8th and 9th, but Mike Marshall put out both rallies like a good fireman. He entered the 8th with runners on 1st and 2nd with only 1 out. Deron Johnson grounded into a force play and Luzinski grounded to third.  He faced a bigger threat in the 9th.  Mike Anderson walked to lead off the inning and while Larry Bowa was looking to get a bunt down, Marshall picked Anderson off.  Two pitches later Bowa tripled to be the tying run at 3rd with only 1 out.  Once again, Mauch went against the book by intentionally walking the winning run to first to set up a potential game ending double play. Pinch-hitter Don Money hit a shallow fly to center on which thrid base coach Billy DeMars didn't send Bowa.  Willie Montanez then struck out swinging on 3 pitches to end the game.

Expos Deal Phillies 3-2 Defeat In a low-scoring tilt between the Montreal Expos and the Philadelphia Phillies, Bill Stoneman was the difference-maker. The Montreal right-hander spearheaded the 3-2 win. Mike Marshall finished the game for Montreal and earned his 1st save. The loss has the Phillies at 2-3. Montreal used a timely hit from Coco Laboy to get the win. The third baseman stroked a 2-run double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Expos ahead, 3-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it made an impact. Stoneman told a Montreal Bulletin reporter he was "pleased as punch" with the win, but Phillie manager Frank Luccessi was fuming. "We just can't lose games that Carlton pitches!!", Lucchesi was heard to rant in the tunnel.
