There must have been a termite rampage at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, MN today because neither the Twins nor the White Sox were able to do much hitting.  Combined, they only had 11 hits, only one of them an extra base hit, and they couldn't score an unearned run.  However, Jim Kaat turned in a masterful pitching performance to lead the Twins to a 1-0 win.

Kaat's 1-walk, 5-single shutout is even more remarkable when you realize he had to pitch around 5 Twins' errors, 3 by Danny Thompson who had a hard time fielding ground balls.  In the third, he induced a double play after Thompson's first error.  In the 4th, a walk, Thompson's 2nd error and a wild pitch put runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, but he was able to get a ground ball at Rod Carew with the infield in and a fly ball to get out of that jam. 

In the 5th, left fielder Cesar Tovar couldn't hang on to a fly ball with 2 out, but Kaat got the next batter to fly to center.  Thompson's 3rd error came in the 8th with 2 out, but put runners at 1st and 2nd for Bill Melton.  At this point, Bill Rigney had to put Dan Monzon in at SS and Melton lined out to right to end the threat.

There was something about shortstop.  With 2 out in the 9th, defensive replacement Dan Monzon missed another ground ball, but Kaat finished it off getting pinch-hitter Mike Andrews to fly out for the win.

The White Sox were a little better in the field, but the only run they allowed was unearned.  Starter Tom Bradley was brilliant through 6, but after Ed Herrmann threw out Tovar stealing, right fielder Walt "No Neck" Williams misplayed Harmon Killebrew's fly ball.  He advanced to 2nd on a ground ball and with 2 outs, he made it to 3rd on Herrmann's passed ball.  He then scored on Jim Holt's single to left and with Killebrew's lack of speed, it's not a given he would have scored from 2nd.

Kaat Magnificent in 1-0 Minnesota Triumph Jim Kaat allowed 5 hits while giving up 1 walk and collecting 5 strikeouts as the Minnesota Twins blanked the Chicago White Sox, 1-0. In the postgame interview, the 33-year-old left-hander said he was focused on "trying to keep the ball down and letting guys put it in play." "It worked for me today," Kaat said.
