California scored 3 in the first in Kansas City and were able to hold off the Royals for a 4-3 win.  The big blow in the first was a 2-run double by Ken McMullen.  The Royals got one back on Angels' fireballer Nolan Ryan in the 2nd.  Ryan, who is as wild as he is fast, walked the first two batters of the inning.  He looked to be out of it with runners at 2nd and 3rd and Royals' pitcher Paul Splittorff at bat.  However, he beat out a nubber along the first base line to bring in a run.

Things settled down from then on.  In the 6th, California added an insurance run when Leo Cardenas followed Andy Kosco's triple with an RBI single.  That insurance run proved valuable.  Ed Kirkpatrick and Richie Scheinblum singled to start the 6th. Ryan then struck out Freddie Patek and got pinch-hitter John Mayberry to fly out.  With Ryan scheduled to lead off the 7th, Del Rice wanted to get him through the 6th, but he was starting to tire. He walked Amos Otis to load the bases and then forced in a run when he walked Cookie Rojas to make it 4-2. The Royals scored again when Ryan threw a wild pitch and then  walked Lou Piniella, his 7th walk of the game, to keep the bases loaded.  Rice had seen enough, and almost waited too long, when he brought in Eddie Fisher to end it by getting Bob Oliver to ground out with the Angels still ahead 4-3.

That is how the game ended.  Tom Murphy held Kansas City to only one hit over the last three innings for the save.

Angels Nip Royals, 4-3 California and Kansas City duked it out and the Angels came out victorious. Starting pitcher Nolan Ryan pitched well enough to help the California Angels beat the Kansas City Royals, 4-3. The victory makes California 2-2. Leo Cardenas, the 12-year veteran , had a direct impact on the outcome. Cardenas contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth inning to put California up, 4-1. "It was a good effort all around," said Cardenas.
