The Padres kick off their 4th season in the big leagues by travelling up the coast and knocking the defending West Division champion Giants around, taking 3 out of 4.  Today, Steve Arlin kept the Giants off balance and, while there was a lot of traffic on the bases, he minimized the damage, allowing only 1 run over 7 innings and striking out 7.

The Padres bunched all their runs off Giant starter Jim Barr in the 2nd inning, With one out, Fred Kendall got the roll started with a triple to right field. Five batters later, Leron Lee blasted a 3-run homer to make the score 5-0 and the young Padres coasted from there.

The Giants had plenty of baserunners, but Arlin and the bullpen got the key outs when they needed them as the frustrated Giant sluggers stranded 10 runners on base.  Lee and Steve Arlin led the Padre attack with 3 hits each.  Willie McCovey had 3 singles for San Francisco.

San Diego goes from here to start a 4 game series in Houston tomorrow. San Francisco has to regroup quickly. They have an off day tomorrow and then start a 9 game roadtrip to Cincinnati, Houston and San Diego.

Giants Lose to Padres, 5-1 San Diego starter Steve Arlin put a stranglehold on the San Francisco offense. The right-hander had complete command of his fastball in leading the Padres to a 5-1 win. Mike Corkins recorded the save, his 1st. San Diego, with the win, is 3-1. San Diego relied on the hitting of Leron Lee to pick up the win. The left fielder clubbed a 3-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Padres on top, 5-0. For the game, Lee had 1 home run and 2 singles in 5 at-bats. "It was a tough night at the plate," said San Francisco manager Charlie Fox.
