April 9, 1972. San Diego 4, San Francisco 2 (Game 1)

This was a regularly scheduled doubleheader without a rainout and even before the strike intervened, wiping out today's games that were not made up.  It seems strange to us in 2023 that MLB would schedule a Sunday doubleheader for a team's 3rd and 4th games, but that was the 70s.

Padres jumped out in the first and scored on a Nate Colbert sacrifice fly.  Dave Kingman tied it up in the 4th with his 1st homer of the year.  Fred Norman and Steve Stone settled in to throw zeroes after that until both tired in the 7th.  Cito Gaston hit a 2-out solo homer to put San Diego ahead and Stone was removed after Leron Lee singled and that man Colbert coming up again.  Don McMahon retired him to keep the score where it was.

In the bottom of the 7th, Gary Matthews stayed hot with a leadoff single, stole 2nd and then came in on a Dave Rader double.  Pinch-hitter Ken Henderson singled to put runners at the corners with only one out.  Preston Gomez summoned hard throwing, but wild, Steve Simpson from the bullpen.  He walked Bobby Bonds to load the bases, but then got the ground ball he needed from Chris Speier for the inning ending double play.

The Padres continued on, scoring the go-ahead run in the 8th on a Gerry Jestadt solo homer.  The Giants got a runner on in their half, but couldn't score him.  The Padres picked up some insurance in the 9th when Leron Lee drove in Derrel Thomas to make it 4-2. Ed Acosta finished off the Giants for his first save.

Late Rally by Padres Locks Up 4-2 Win San Diego rode a decent outing from starter Fred Norman to victory over the San Francisco Giants. The final score was 4-2. The win belongs to Steve Simpson in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Jim Willoughby took the loss for San Francisco. The win has San Diego at 2-1. San Diego needed the clutch hitting of Garry Jestadt to notch the win. The third baseman hammered a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Padres on top, 3-2. For the game, Jestadt had 1 home run and 2 singles in 4 at-bats. "Some of the guys in here work hard, some of the guys just kind of fall out of bed and get it done. Whatever works I guess, we won this one," Jestadt told the San Diego Observer.
