April 9, 1972. Houston 3, Atlanta 1 (Game 1)

 Don Wilson did it all in the first of two games in Atlanta against the Braves as the Astros get their first win of the year, 3-1.  The game was scoreless going into the top of the 6th.  Atlanta had removed starter George Stone for a pinch-hitter trying to get a run home in the 5th. Pat Jarvis sandwiched walks to Larry Howard and Roger Metzger around a couple of walks.  Astro manager Harry Walker had to be considering whether to lift Wilson, but ultimately decided to leave him in because of how he's pitched thus far this season.

Wilson made Walker look like a genius with a 2-run, 2-out triple and he scored when Cesar Cedeno followed with a single to center.  Dusty Baker led off the bottom of the 6th with a homer to get one back. However, despite several good threats, the Braves couldn't score any others.  The game ended with 2 runners on and slugger Darrel Evans was the winning run at the plate, but Fred Gladding fanned him on a 1-2 fastball to break Houston from the ranks of the winless. Both teams danced in and out of trouble all night as the Astros stranded 12 runners and the Braves stranded 10.

The Houston Astros got a strong performance from pitcher Don Wilson, who stymied the Atlanta offense en route to a win, 3-1, at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium 1966-1973. Wilson, now 1-1, was the winner. In 7.2 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 4, walking 2, and allowing 1 run. Fred Gladding recorded his 1st save for Houston.

In the top of the sixth, Wilson put his team in front with his 1st triple of the season. The 2-run triple, which came against Pat Jarvis, made it 2-0, Houston.

"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Wilson said after the game.

Houston now has a record of 1-3.

April 12, 1972. Boston 7, Cleveland 1 (Game 1)

Boston's hitters looked like they were answering the early call today as they came around and put a whooping on Cleveland, 7-1.  Tommy Harper took Gaylord Perry's 4th pitch over the left field wall to lead off the game with a 1-0 lead and the Red Sox just kept going.  Cleveland got its only run of the game in the bottom of the 3rd on Del Unser's RBI single. But any idea of a shutdown inning went by the boards when Boston put 3 on the board in the top of the 4th off Perry.  Perry, however, dug his own hole that inning with 2 walks to start the inning. Carlton Fisk doubled in one, followed by Ben Oglivie's RBI single and Juan Beniquez' sacrifice fly.  Oglivie had a 2-run single in the 9th to put the game out of reach. Sonny Siebert pitched well, going 7 innings, fanning 5 and only allowing 1 run to even his record at 1-1. Gary Peters cleaned up the last 2 innings. April 13, 1972. Pittsburgh 5, Chicago Cubs 2

It was a clear day with the wind blowing out to right at Wrigley Field, but the 18216 fans in attendance saw an extremely sloppy game played as the Pirates beat the Cubs 5-2.  Pittsburgh won despite committing 5 errors, 3 by their pitchers.  The Cubs chipped in with 3 errors of their own.  However both teams' pitchers were up to the task as each team stranded 11 runners and only gave up 1 unearned run. The Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the third on a Billy Williams 2-run homer, following a Richie Hebner error that put Don Kessinger on base.  Not all of the fielding in this game was a disaster, however, as Manny Sanguillen had thrown out Jose Cardenal stealing, or the score would be 3-1. The score stayed there until the 6th.  One of the unlikeliest Pirates, Gene Alley, put the Pirates on top to stay, 3-2, with a 2-run homer off Cub starter Burt Hooton.  Hooton knuckled under to keep the Pirates off the board through the rest of his 7 innings.   The Cubs ...

April 14, 1972. Pittsburgh 5, New York Mets 3

 Pittsburgh ran their winning streak to 3 games with a 5-3 win over the Mets.  This was Bob Moose's first start and it was a dandy.  Moose threw a complete game only allowing 5 hits, 2 earned runs, and didn't walk anybody. Pittsburgh got off on the right foot in the top of the 1st when Roberto Clemente followed up a Dave Cash single with a 2-run homer. He later had an RBI triple in the 8th to finish with 3 hits, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.  That RBI triple and Clemente scoring on Al Oliver's single gave the Pirates some breathing room at 5-2.  John Milner hit a leadoff homer in the 9th, but the Mets couldn't threaten any more than that. Those 3 hits by Clemente push his career total to within 106 of the magic 3000 plateau, which seems like an easily attainable goal this year if he stays healthy.
