 Last year San Diego's offense was not very potent and it doesn't look to be this year either.  Except for one man.  Nate Colbert can be a one man wrecking crew as he was today in Candlestick as he powered the Padres to a 7-3 win over the Giants.  Colbert homered in the first and the 9th for 5 of the Padres runs as they got their first win of the year.

Giants' new starter Sam McDowell showed some wildness as he walked the first 2 batters in the top of the first before Colbert's first clout made it 3-0 before the crowd had a chance to get seated.  McDowell settled down from there, and the Giants started chipping away.  An unearned run on a bad throw in the 3rd and a 2-run Willie McCovey homer in the 6th tied it.  

San Diego scored the go-ahead run in the 8th when Leron Lee came home on a ground ball Dave Kingman couldn't handle.  Who hit it?  Nate Colbert, of course.  Then, in the 9th Colbert put the game away with a 2-run homer after Derrel Thomas homered earlier in the inning.  The Padre bullpen held down the Giants for a 7-3 win.

Colbert Slugs Padres to 7-3 Win Nate Colbert was a major contributor to the 7-3 San Diego win over San Francisco. The Padres first baseman was 2 for 5 with 2 home runs. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. The win puts San Diego at 1-1. Colbert had an important at-bat with a runner on 2nd in the top of the eighth, when he reached on an error by the 3B, driving in 1 run. The Padres went on to win. "We took advantage of our opportunities," Colbert told the San Diego Observer. "It's as simple as that."
