April 8, 1972. Chicago Cubs 4, Montreal 2.

The Expos felt like they were playing catch up the whole game.  The Cubs scratched single runs off Carl Morton in the 2nd and the 6th while Bill Hands was holding Montreal off the board.  However, Montreal got something going in the 8th. Jim Fairey led off with a pinch-homer.  Mike Jorgensen singled and advanced to second with 2 out.  Ken Singleton's 2nd double of the game brought Jorgensen in to tie the game.

Montreal brings in ace reliever Mike Marshall to hold the Cubs even.  But a Tim Foli error puts Randy Hundley on 1st. Reliever Juan Pizarro sacrifices him to 2nd and then Jose Cardenal hits the big blow of the game with a 2-run homer.  Montreal can't muster anything more than 3 ground balls in the bottom of the 9th and Joe Decker claims his 1st save.

Expos Lose to Cubs, 4-2 Chicago Cubs starter Bill Hands turned in a top-notch performance against the Montreal Expos at Jarry Park 1969-1976. The result was a win for the Cubs, 4-2. Chicago reliever Juan Pizarro got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Mike Marshall was tagged with the loss. The defeat makes Montreal 1-1. Chicago needed the clutch hitting of Jose Cardenal to notch the win. The right fielder hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Cubs on top, 4-2. For the game, Cardenal had 1 home run and 1 single in 5 at-bats. "Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Hands told the Chicago News.
