April 12, 1972. Boston 7, Cleveland 1 (Game 1)

Boston's hitters looked like they were answering the early call today as they came around and put a whooping on Cleveland, 7-1.  Tommy Harper took Gaylord Perry's 4th pitch over the left field wall to lead off the game with a 1-0 lead and the Red Sox just kept going. 

Cleveland got its only run of the game in the bottom of the 3rd on Del Unser's RBI single. But any idea of a shutdown inning went by the boards when Boston put 3 on the board in the top of the 4th off Perry.  Perry, however, dug his own hole that inning with 2 walks to start the inning. Carlton Fisk doubled in one, followed by Ben Oglivie's RBI single and Juan Beniquez' sacrifice fly.  Oglivie had a 2-run single in the 9th to put the game out of reach.

Sonny Siebert pitched well, going 7 innings, fanning 5 and only allowing 1 run to even his record at 1-1. Gary Peters cleaned up the last 2 innings.

The Boston Red Sox racked up a win at Cleveland Stadium 1970-1979, bumping off the Cleveland Indians, 7-1. Sonny Siebert, who started for Boston, pitched effectively for his team. In 7 innings, Siebert surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 1. He allowed 1 run. The loss puts Cleveland at 2-2.

Boston relied on the bat of Carlton Fisk to get the win. The catcher ripped a run-scoring double in the top of the fourth inning to put the Red Sox ahead, 2-1. For the game, Fisk had 2 doubles and 1 triple in 4 at-bats.

"We can't enjoy this win very long, but it'll be sweet tonight if we sweep the doubleheader," said Fisk.

Tom Terrific lived up to his nickname as Seaver blanked the Cardinals for the 1st 7 innings on his way to a 7-3 win over St. Louis and fellow ace Bob Gibson.  The Mets benefited from some uncharacteristic wildness from Gibson as he walked 4 in the 2nd inning.  The Mets cashed in each one of those walks and added 4 hits of their own to hang 7 runs on Gibson.  The inning was punctuated by Ed Kranepool's 3-run homer and Tommie Agee's 3-run double. After that 2nd and a shaky 3rd inning, Gibson settled down and the Cards held the Mets scoreless the rest of the way. However the damage done in the 2nd was too great. The wind was blowing in today in Fenway Park, which just made today's starters, Luis Tiant for Boston and Bill Slayback for Detroit, even more effective. The Tigers and Red Sox were trying to test the theory that you have to score to win because through 8, both teams were scoreless and neither had put up much of a threat with only 2 hits each.   The Red Sox had a mini-threat going in the 8th with Aparicio on first with one out, so they pinch hit for Tiant, who had economically gone 8 scoreless on only 81 pitches. But pinch-hitter Dwight Evans flied to left and then Aparicio was caught stealing to end the threat. A walk and a wild pitch got a runner to 2nd with one out for the Tigers in the 9th, but Bill Lee set down Jim Northrup and Dick McAuliffe to end it.  In the Red Sox half, Tommy Harper walked and took second on a grounder. In a back and forth game in St. Louis this afternoon, the Cardinals had the advantage of batting last and they took advantage of it as Lou Brock powered one out of the park with a man on to give the Cardinals a 6-4 win.  Brock had quite a day, going 4/5 with 2 stolen bases.   Ted Sizemore had a 2-run double in the 4th to give the Cards a 2-1 lead.  But that was short-lived as Denny Doyle responded with his own 2-run double in the top of the 5th to put the Phils on top 3-2.  Lou Brock and Ted Simmons each had RBI singles to put the Cards up 4-3 in the bottom of the 7th. It stayed there until the top of the 9th.  Willie Montanez and Terry Harmon singled with one out.  After Moe Drabowsky struck out Deron Johnson, Greg Luzinski singled to left, scoring Montanez to tie the game.  Mike Anderson struck out to keep the Phillies from doing more damage.
