For the hardy few that hung around to the end of tonight's 14 inning game, they saw a taut, well-pitched game where the outcome could turn on any batter. Unfortunately for those few, the defending World Series champs dropped to 1-3 with a 3-2 loss to the new Texas Rangers.

Dick Bosman and Catfish Hunter locked up in a pitching duel while they were in there.  Bosman was lifted for a pinch-hitter after 6, only allowing a solo homer to George Hendrick.  Hunter was in for 8 innings and struck out 9 in a dominant performance. Texas could only manage a Ted Ford RBI single in the 6th.  

The A's had only 4 hits in the entire game, never had two in an inning and had no hits between a no-out single in the 5th by Hendrick and a game-tying solo homer by Reggie Jackson in the 12th.  That would also be the last hit by the A's.

In the 14th, Darold Knowles followed Hunter, Rollie Fingers and Diego Segui to the mound.  Texas got an infield single by Elliot Maddox, who stole second before a walk to Toby Harrah. Maddox advanced to 3rd on a fly ball to left by catcher Hal King.  Ted Williams was running out of players and sent Lenny Randle up to pinch hit for the 5th Ranger pitcher, Paul Lindblad. Randle hit a fly ball deep enough to center to score the speedy Maddox with the winning run.  The A's mounted something of a rally of Rick Henninger, but the Rangers infield turned a double play with runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out to end the game.

This is the longest game of the year.  It lasted 4 hours and 21 minutes and ended just shy of 11:30 p.m. local time.  INJURY NOTE:  Ranger reliever Don Stanhouse developed a blister and will be out a week.  We'll wait until tomorrow to see if he's put on the 15-day DL, but with the bullpen worked in this game, that seems to be likely.

Rangers Sneak By Athletics, 3-2 Fans who congregated at Oakland Coliseum were treated to extra-inning drama. The Texas Rangers had to overcome a fine effort from Oakland pitcher Catfish Hunter to grab a narrow 3-2 win at Oakland Coliseum. Hunter went 8 innings and allowed 1 run. The loss drops the Athletics to 1-3. Lenny Randle, the 23-year old third baseman , had a direct impact on the outcome. Randle contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the 14th inning to put Texas up, 3-2. "We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Randle told a Dallas Morning News reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."
