Jim Hicks led San Diego to victory on both sides of the ball in an exciting 11th inning in the Astrodome.  In the 3rd inning, Hicks' 2-run double opened the scoring.  The Astros came back with single runs in the 3rd and 4th to tie it up on RBI singles by Bob Watson and Larry Howard.  The pitchers then took over and stifled both offenses.  Bill Grief went through 6 before handing off to Mike Corkins for the next three. Ken Forsch got the Astros through 7 and then Tom Griffin blanked the Padres the next two.

After a scoreless 10th, Nate Colbert draws a 1-out walk.  He's then promptly thrown out stealing for the second out with Hicks at the plate. Hicks then sent the next George Culver pitch over the left field wallto give his Padres a 3-2 lead.

Ed Acosta came out in the 11th for his second inning of work and got in trouble.  After getting Jim Wynn to pop out, Tommy Helms singled and went to second on a wild pitch.  Johnny Edwards then singled to center, but Helms wasn't going to be able to score.  With runners at 1st and 3rd, Harry Walker sent Doug Rader up to pinch hit.  Rader hit a long fly ball to center and Helms tried to score. Jim Hicks uncorked an unbelievable throw to nail a surprised Helms at home plate and end the game.

Jim Hicks was obviously the player of the game by driving in all 3 Padre runs with 2-out and getting the walk off outfield assist to seal the win.

(Game note:  In reality, Hicks played his last MLB game in 1970 and spent 1972 with the famed Hawaii Islanders hitting 26 homers and a .326/.458/.570 slash line. He played 1973-74 in Japan with the Hiroshima Carp, but only hit .247 with 33 homers in 600 plate appearances across the two seasons.  He made the Padres opening day lineup in this replay over Johnny Jeter just because he looked to have good skills.  So far, it's worked out well.)

Padres Deal Astros 3-2 Loss Jim Hicks helped his team muscle past the Houston Astros, 3-2. In the game, the San Diego center fielder was 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, and 2 walks. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. The win puts San Diego at 4-2. Hicks had a game-changing home run in the top of the 11th. On a full count fastball from George Culver, he banged a solo home run to left, giving the Padres a 3-2 lead. It was the 1st home run of the year for Hicks. "We'll hit the hot tub in good spirits tonight," said Hicks.
