Tom Terrific lived up to his nickname as Seaver blanked the Cardinals for the 1st 7 innings on his way to a 7-3 win over St. Louis and fellow ace Bob Gibson.  The Mets benefited from some uncharacteristic wildness from Gibson as he walked 4 in the 2nd inning.  The Mets cashed in each one of those walks and added 4 hits of their own to hang 7 runs on Gibson.  The inning was punctuated by Ed Kranepool's 3-run homer and Tommie Agee's 3-run double.

After that 2nd and a shaky 3rd inning, Gibson settled down and the Cards held the Mets scoreless the rest of the way. However the damage done in the 2nd was too great. The Cardinals could only manage a 2-run double from Matty Alou and a solo homer from Joe Torre when it was too late.  

Seaver only struck out 2, but the Cardinals couldn't string anything together against him until the 8th.  Seaver evened his record at 1-1.  A crowd of over 30,000 turned out for the home opener this afternoon. After another day off tomorrow, we'll be back at Shea as Rick Wise and Jerry Koosman will face off in the final game of this 2 game series.

Mets Bang Out 7-3 Win Versus St. Louis New York pitcher Tom Seaver did his part in helping his team beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-3. The right-hander kept opposing batters in check throughout the game. New York goes to 3-1. Ed Kranepool took Bob Gibson deep in the bottom of the second. His 3-run home run put the Mets on top, 3-0. In all, Kranepool had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 4. "Tom is tough when he's hitting his spots," said New York manager Yogi Berra.
