This game looked like it was going to be a high scoring game.  Montreal came out of the gates against Billy Champion getting 4 hits in a row and scoring 2 runs.  In fact, the top 4 hitters in the Expos lineup were 8/16.  But after that hot start Bob Bailey flied out and Tim Foli hit into a double play to end it.  Balor Moore came out for Montreal, and the score was tied within 3 batters when Deron Johnson hit a 2-run homer to tie it with one out.

But after that 2-2 first inning Champion and Moore settled in and there was no other scoring in the game. Except for the bottom of the fifth.  Champion led off with a single and advance to 2nd on a ground ball. Montanez struck out and then Deron Johnson lined a single to center to score Champion with the go-ahead run.  And that was the last of the scoring as the Phillies held on to a tough 3-2 win.

After the 1st, Billy pitched like a Champion, going 7 innings. Although he allowed 9 hits, the infield turned 3 double plays behind him.  Ken Reynolds and Billy Wilson finished off Montreal to close the game.  Johnson, Champion and Bob Boone all had 2 hits for Philadelphia.  

Ken Singleton had 3 hits for Montreal and Ron Woods, Ron Fairly and Johnny Bateman each chipped in with 2.  After Balor Moore left in the 5th, they got stellar relief work from Tom Walker for 1.1 innings and Mike Torrez for 2 innings.

The teams get an off day tomorrow and will come back Wednesday with the Phillies throwing Steve Carlton and the Expos likely to send Bill Stoneman to the hill.

Expos Come Up Short at Philadelphia, 3-2 In a close game at Veterans Stadium 1971-1984, the Philadelphia Phillies edged the Montreal Expos, 3-2. Philadelphia first baseman Deron Johnson stood apart with his performance. He went 2-4 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Bill Champion was the winner. Over 7 innings, he allowed 2 runs on 9 hits, with no walks and 3 strikeouts. The win has Philadelphia at 2-2. Johnson contributed in the bottom of the first. With a runner on 1st, he hit a 2-run home run. It was one at-bat among others that helped Philadelphia get the win. "We were in it," said Montreal manager Gene Mauch. "We just didn't score enough runs."
