The Houston Astros have stopped the San Diego winning streak at 3 games while running their own winning streak to 3 games with a 3-2 win in the Astrodome.  This game was tight the whole way through as Jerry Reuss and Clay Kirby put on quite a show.  They matched zero for zero until the Padres broke through in the 4th. Clarence Gaston led off with a single and Nate Colbert followed with a triple. Colbert then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ed Spezio to take a 2-0 lead.

It stayed there until the bottom of the 6th.  Cesar Cedeno led off with his 2nd double of the game and one out later he scored on Lee May's double.  Bob Watson followed with a 2-run homer and that's where all the scoring ended.  

The bullpens had work to do in this game. In the 7th, Kirby struck out Reuss to start the inning, but walked Roger Metzger on 4 pitches to bring up Cedeno.  Manager Preston Gomez didn't need to see that matchup again and brought in Gary Ross from the pen. Ross walked Cedeno on 4 pitches, probably a good strategy this night, and then got the next two to keep the Astro lead at one run.  

In the top of the 8th, Reuss starts by walking the first two batters and is taken out in favor of Tom Griffin. Griffin gives up a single to Gaston which loads the bases with nobody out for Nate Colbert.  With only a 1-run lead there's absolutely no margin for error, so Griffin strikes out Colbert and Jim Hicks and gets Ivan Murrell to hit a grounder to Lee May to end the threat.  Fred Gladding closed it out in the 9th.

Astros Edge Padres, 3-2 The Houston Astros topped the San Diego Padres, 3-2, in NL action at Astrodome 1965-1994. The game was highlighted by the performance of Houston pitcher Jerry Reuss. Reuss, the winner, moves to 1-0. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 9 and giving up 3 walks. Fred Gladding was called on to finish, recording his 2nd save. In the bottom of the sixth, Houston left fielder Bob Watson gave his team the lead. With one out and a runner on 2nd, Bull hit his 1st home run of the year. San Diego pitcher Clay Kirby surrendered it. With that, the Astros jumped in front, 3-2. "You can't get too high when things go well, or too low when things go bad. Right now, I'm just happy we got the win," Watson told the Houston Daily News. The defeat makes San Diego 3-2.
