 A nice day in Montreal and the wind was blowing out to the swimming pool in RF, but that was not a factor as the pitching dominated.  Early on, Bill Stoneman and Ferguson Jenkins matched each other zero for zero.  In the 4th, both leadoff walks came around to score for the Cubs on RBI singles by Glenn Beckert and Don Kessinger. In the Montreal 6th, the first 4 batters reached on 2 singles and 2 walks, only one run scored on a bases loaded walk to Ken Singleton as Jenkins struck out Fairly and got Bob Bailey to hit into a double play to get out of the bases loaded, no out jam with just the 1 run scoring.

Montreal threatened again in the 8th, but a leadoff single turned into a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play, which was fortunate, as Mike Jorgensen followed with a double. The Cubs stranded him at second.

Ron Fairly led off the home 9th with a game-tying homer. The Expos didn't stop there as they loaded the bases with one out. Pinch-hitter Jim Fairey launched what looked like a game-winning SF over a drawn in outfield, but Billy Williams uncorked a bullet to home to double up Bob Bailey. 

In the 10th, Tom Walker easily set the Cubs down. The Cubs brought in Steve Hamilton, but 1 out singles by Mike Jorgensen and Ken Singleton put runners at the corners with 1 out.  This time Billy Williams couldn't gun down Jorgensen on Ron Fairly's SF and the Expos pulled out a come from behind 3-2 win in 10.

Expos Edge Cubs, 3-2 The Montreal Expos satisfied the home crowd at Jarry Park 1969-1976, treating them to a season-opening win, 3-2, over the Chicago Cubs. Starting Pitcher Bill Stoneman was the standout performer for Montreal. Montreal reliever Tom Walker was the winner. His record is now 1-0. Steve Hamilton took the loss. The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the tenth inning, when Montreal right fielder Ron Fairly, facing Steve Hamilton, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Expos the 3-2 win. Fairly called the win "a team effort."
