April 12, 1972. Boston 7, Cleveland 1 (Game 1)

Boston's hitters looked like they were answering the early call today as they came around and put a whooping on Cleveland, 7-1.  Tommy Harper took Gaylord Perry's 4th pitch over the left field wall to lead off the game with a 1-0 lead and the Red Sox just kept going.  Cleveland got its only run of the game in the bottom of the 3rd on Del Unser's RBI single. But any idea of a shutdown inning went by the boards when Boston put 3 on the board in the top of the 4th off Perry.  Perry, however, dug his own hole that inning with 2 walks to start the inning. Carlton Fisk doubled in one, followed by Ben Oglivie's RBI single and Juan Beniquez' sacrifice fly.  Oglivie had a 2-run single in the 9th to put the game out of reach. Sonny Siebert pitched well, going 7 innings, fanning 5 and only allowing 1 run to even his record at 1-1. Gary Peters cleaned up the last 2 innings.
